Great book

What I really liked about the book is that the author really knows her stuff. She's not only giving you diagnostic signs but she's giving you the remedies and solutions took, and it's here where her depth of knowledge comes shining through. A well written, well organized and easy to understand book. Let's hope we see more publications from her in the future.

About the Author
David Kent Ballast, FAIA, NCARB, CSI is the owner of Architectural Research Consulting, a firm offering information and management services to architects, interior designers, and the construction industry. Mr. Ballast taught interior construction and other courses for twenty years at Arapahoe Community College. A licensed architect in Colorado and an NCIDQ certificate holder, Mr. Ballast has authored many books published by PPI on design topics and ARE review.
Holly Williams Leppo, AIA, is an NCARB-certified architect, an NCIDQ certificate holder, and a LEED AP. Ms. Leppo has authored and co-authored several ARE and LEED exam review books published by PPI.  She holds a bachelor of integrative arts degree from The Pennsylvania State University and a master of architecture degree from Washington University in St. Louis.
Rima Taher, PhD, PE, has been teaching ARE review courses in general structures and lateral forces since 2002 at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, where she received a university-wide award for teaching excellence. Dr. Taher earned her master of science and doctorate degrees in civil engineering from the historic and prestigious École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées in Paris. She has also lectured on the topic of wind engineering and structural design for high winds and hurricanes at the Wind Engineering Research Center at the Tokyo Polytechnic University. She is a licensed civil and structural engineer in New Jersey.

Decent chronology of Johns life; focus on his dark last days

Woodward's book is, of course, flawed like Judy Belushi's "Samurai Widow"; but other than these two books there is nothing more of Belushi to refer back to, in the written form. There will always be the SNL videos, the Blues Brothers CDs, or the handful of movies John did, but where does one interested enough start from when they want to make some chronological order of Belushi's life; to learn more about his exhuberent ascent, his tumultuous descent and his final dark months, weeks and days? Bob Woodward gives the reader a dry and thorough, if not somewhat-slanted, take on John Belushi's 33 years on planet Earth. The reader simply cannot help but get the feeling that the author is emphasizing the downward spiral and the end of a manically funny man, which is why this book wasn't received very well when it was first released, back in 1984.. Still, from JB's days in Wheaton, Illinois, Second City Chicago and National Lampoon, to Saturday Night Live, Hollywood and the Chateau Maramont Bungalow #3, Woodward's book is worth 3 1/2 starts and, at the very least, one good read-through.

Puts things in perspective

I read this book about once a year to remind myself of how much I want to live. For anyone caught up in the illusion of the glory of life in the fast lane, the second half of this book, dealing with Belushi's last great binge in minute-by-minute detail, should be a real eye-opener. Woodward paints a balanced portrait of a much-loved, charasmatic individual trapped by his own demons. Alternately fascinating and horrifying, this is perhaps the best celebrity biography I have read. I sincerely hope it comes back into print - if not, I suggest you try to hunt a copy down; it is worth your time.

Very interesting and sad book, but not very well written.

The story of John Belushi's life was a rollercoaster ride of very low times of self destruction, separated by short rises of happiness and accomplishment. John seemed to be someone that just could not be happy in his own skin, he did not see himself as a worthy human being who deserved to be happy, but instead someone who did not deserve his fame, or did not feel he was respected in the ways he thought he should be, he was constantly trying to prove himself. John was selfish, yes, he would binge for weeks on drugs, parties, and the fast life looking to fill that void regardless of who it hurt. He destroyed friendships as fast as he made them, but was always the one quick to apologize and try to mend the bridge he had just burned. I feel sorry for John and wish that he would of been given the help he was crying out to receive. Like so many before and after him his problems were ignored in hopes that he would somehow see the light and snap out of it on his own. John is to blame for his own death, and partial blame goes to his friends, but a huge part of the blame rests on Hollywood's shoulders. A town that rewards it successful entertainers with money and fame, and then quickly shuns them the minute that entertainers value has been sucked dry. Hollywood glorifies a lifestyle, in it's movies, that in reality is an impossible one to maintain. The book is very poorly written in my opinion, and Woodward easily confuses the reader by jumping from quote to quote. The readers many times is left unsure of who the quote is being taken from or who exactly the quote is about. There are a lot of scattered bits of information in the book as well and also many typos. For example in one section John's heart is described as being 222 lbs after his death. The book was interesting but so scattered I found my self struggling to stay focused and had to re-read many paragraphs to fully understand what exactly Woodward was trying to say.

About the Author
Until her injury in July 1988, Claudia L. Osborn taught and practiced internal medicine in a busy inner-city Detroit hospital. A graduate of Vassar College and Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, she is currently an Associate Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine at MSU, and makes her home in Grosse Pointe, Michigan.

Acceptance and patience in recovery from a brain injury

Claudia Osborn was a physician when she was hit by a car while riding her bike one night. This resulted in a traumatic brain injury.

This book describes her journey afterwards, her treatment, her deficits, her futile hopes for the future and the grief when she realized she couldn't achieve them. She talks about her unwavering resolve to make herself able to function, by writing herself notes, recording directions on her tape recorder and filling notebooks with lists of how to go about her day.

This book really made me understand how a tbi can affect a person in so many ways we cannot begin to see. It was fascinating and fun, thorough and intelligent, and I feel I and many others will benefit from reading this book, specifically for the understanding that it provides and the patience that it teaches. These lessons are good for us non-brain-injured people, too - especially the ones on acceptance and patience.

A really good read on the topic of head injuries for those ...

A really good read on the topic of head injuries for those of us with the injuries and for the families that care for us with head injuries to give them some insight, It was engaging and it was great to read her perspective as a Doctor because explaining it to the doctors I had that were not involved when I was hit by a car is very difficult. Nice to be able to give them a title written by a Doctor who is still healing in so many ways.

This is the best book on TBI and living with the results that I have read and I have read a lot! I experienced a TBI when I was stopped at a traffic light and was t-boned. I wish that all people with head injuries and all doctors could read this book.

Disappointed

This book may contain some useful information but it is so poorly structured it's extremely tedious if not nearly impossible to dig it out. It is organized alphabetically by author rather than topic. There are cross indexes at the back of the book but they fail to give page numbers. Definitely recommend against purchasing.

Even though this book sounded promising, it was in the end very disappointing. There are a few problems. Firstly, the references are organized poorly, I would like to have seen listings under for example 'piano technique', 'interpretation', 'biographies','piano history', etc. Instead it is just one very long alphabetical list with some limited cross-references at the end that are not practical to use. Secondly, a lot of references are to quite obscure. Finally, there is no advice at all, it is purely a listing, and thus no value is added by the author. I think the idea of the book is excellent, but it needs revamping!
