Ancient History from Coins (Approaching the Ancient World), by Christopher Howgego

Like other volumes in this series, Ancient History from Coins demystifies a specialism, introducing students (from first year upwards) to the techniques, methods, problems and advantages of using coins to do ancient history.
Coins are a fertile source of information for the ancient historian; yet too often historians are uneasy about using them as evidence because of the special problems attaching to their interpretation. The world of numismatics is not always easy for the non-specialist to penetrate or understand with confidence. Dr Howgego describes and anlyses the main contributions the study of coins can make to ancient history, showing shows through numerous examples how the character, patterns and behaviour of coinage bear on major historical themes. Topics range from state finance and economic policy to imperial domination and political propaganda through coins types.
The period covered by the book is from the invention of coinage (ca 600BC) to AD 400.

An excellent introduction to the use of ancient coins
By Aquila
The field of numismatics is one of the most specialized and isolated areas of historical scholarship, and as a result it is probably not used as much as it should be by historians. Coins have special problems associated with their interpretation, but this is true of every other kind of evidence we have (e.g., literary, epigraphic, archaeological). Christopher Howgego's book is intended to demystify the subject of ancient coins and narrow the unwelcome gap between numismatists and other kinds of historians. Howgego's approach is thematic and covers a 900-year period, and although he deals with a wide range of ancient civilizations, he does not intend for his study to be comprehensive. It differs from similar books in providing a useful summary of modern numismatic research and outlining the major problems of using coins as a historical source. Howgego's book is one of the most useful available on the subject of numismatics and ancient history.

The book is divided into six chapters that address various themes and problems associated with coins. The first ("Money") outlines the history of coinage and asks why having a system of coinage mattered to ancient societies. Chapter 2 ("Minting") addresses the production of coins and why they were used. Chapters 3 and 4 ("Empires" and "Politics") form the core of the book, showing how coinage related to broader ideas such as imperialism, power, and politics. Several case studies are used to illustrate the variety of coin use by different societies while developing the convincing central thesis that coins related very strongly to these themes in each of them. The final two chapters ("Circulation" and "Crisis") are fairly technical studies of specifically economic issues such as the devaluation and debasement of coins, inflation, and the problems involved in determining the circulation of coins in antiquity.

The overall structure of the book is generally well-defined and organized, though a concluding chapter would be useful in lessening the somewhat fragmentary presentation by summarizing the main ideas. The final two chapters in particular seem a bit out of place due to their more technical and statistical nature, but they might have been better tied into Howgego's main thesis with a general concluding section. Howgego's general presentation and thesis are admittedly difficult to criticize. He makes excellent use of other types of evidence against that of coins to show that no aspect of the surviving evidence should be considered in isolation. An immediately noticable aspect of his analysis, however, is the general weakness of the Greek side compared with the Roman, but there are possible explanations for this: Howgego is an expert on Roman coins in particular, and the evidence is fuller for Rome than for Greece. Still, this imbalance might have been avoided by allowing a Greek numismatic specialist to handle that part of the study to make it more complete and well-rounded. Still, his coverage of the Hellenistic kingdoms is much better than those in other general studies.

Most of the problems of the book are relatively minor and relate to specific points of interpretation or choice of terms. For example, Howgego uses the term "laissez-faire" repeatedly; he might have used a more appropriate definition to make his point without exposing himself to the danger of misleading readers with a modern economic concept. This is a very real danger, particularly in economic studies, and because this book is intended to be an introduction to numismatics he should have avoided it. Many studies of the so-called "ancient economy" depend on modern concepts (most of which cannot be applied to the ancient world), and scholars should strive to discuss them in terms more appropriate to the eras in question.

There is one area where I believe Howgego's analysis to be flawed. In Chapter 4 he writes, "the reduction in the numismatic repertoire [in the early 4th-century] was matched by a decline in sculptural reliefs and portraiture in general. Politics were now at court, there was no longer the same need to appeal to wider groups." The absence of greater quantities of portraiture and sculpture is not because there was no longer such a need to appeal to wider groups, but rather that such things were becoming increasingly expensive in the 3rd and 4th centuries, and money was not as readily available for use on these pieces of imperial propaganda as it once had been. It would be more accurate to say that the need to appeal to wider groups was still very much alive, particularly given the divide between the Christian and pagan aspects of late Roman society. This oversimplifies a very complicated issue, of course, but I think Howgego's analysis here is flawed nonetheless.

Such reservations having been mentioned (and there are a few others), it must be emphasized that the good points of this book far outweigh the bad. In presenting the major problems involved in the study of coins and the current state of numismatic research in the more difficult areas, Howgego raises very interesting, important, and difficult questions. This is perhaps the best impact any such book can have, as it opens up new possibilities and avenues for future inquiry. The book raises questions related to economic history, politics, power, autonomy, and so on. Howgego's excellent use of comparative evidence is an example of one of the more profitable modern trends of historical inquiry used in the best way possible, and in doing so he shows that the study of coins is relevant to every period of ancient history. He addresses the political, military, and social realities that are too often left out of studies relating to economic matters, showing that many of these self-contained modern theories, although useful in their own ways, cannot work when the ambiguities and difficulties presented by the ancient world are applied to them. Howgego's approach differs from most of the standard works on ancient numismatics in that he deals with broader historical questions. This book takes the study of numismatics to the next level by refocusing attention on some of the more important considerations that have been left behind as the field of numismatics has grown increasingly specialized. Howgego succeeds admirably in what he sets out to achieve, and his book will likely become one of the most important general studies relating to ancient coins.

How not to produce a Kindle book
By Anonymous
This is not a comment on the substance of the book, but on its adaptation to the Kindle.

This is the second book I purchased for my new Kindle 2, and it is not a success. The most annoying problem is with the plates. The book contains numerous photos of coins that are grouped in a single section of plates and referred to in the text through bracketed numbers. However, the references are not hot-linked to the pictures, as could and should have been done in an ebook, and I find it inconvenient to hop back and forth from one section to another on the Kindle. However, that really makes no difference because the pictures are so tiny and reproduced at such low resolution as to be absolutely useless anyway.

The book is written in a "scholarly" tone that I find awkward and difficult to read. It seems more intended to anticipate objections of peer experts than to inform the layman. Again, not a comment on substance, but on style.

If you intend to buy this book, buy the hard copy version, not the Kindle.

OK, but...
By Larry N. Stout
The upside: authoritative, with high-quality images. The downside: the title is misleadingly comprehensive, as the array of illustrated coins is very limited; and, the text is conspicuously pedantic in style and tone.

From Library Journal
Designed as an introductory textbook to teach the basic principles of nutrition and their applications, this hefty volume brings together a wealth of information for the serious reader. Part 1 analyzes the building blocks of nutrition; Part 2 evaluates foods and diets; Part 3 discusses building a healthy diet; and Part 4 explains nutritional applications. But this book also examines topics not usually found in textbooks--herbal supplements, homeopathic medicines, environmental aspects of nutrition, and detoxification and healing programs, to name just a few. Although this exhaustive study is accurate and up to date, it's formidable length (over 1000 pages!) will greatly limit its appeal. Most readers concerned about healthy eating will prefer Jane Brody's Nutrition Book ( LJ 5/1/81) and/or Jean Carper's Total Nutrition Guide ( LJ 3/15/87).

Reliable Resource for Nutritional Health Information
By Onesimus
There is a lot of useful information on the internet these days, however, when it comes to health, much of that information is trendy and subject to poor quality research. This book presents an extremely thorough and balanced approach to health and nutrition in a readable manner.

This book isn't content with just telling you what to do, it breaks nutritional health down to basic elements and explains the functions with usable knowledge that will help you address situations that might not be directly covered in the book itself.

I am going to use this book as supplementary material for homeschooling in addition to using it for practical health insights for myself and my family as a whole.

This is a book that I would recommend every household to own.

One of the top books for learning about nutrition!
By Mary Anne Myslinski
Nutrition is a must with my husband and I, especially as we get older and wiser! This book is perfect for what anyone needs to know about good nutrition and why it is so important. It even has recipes, which I have tried, and they are great! It is quite a lot to read and that is fine with me - the more knowledge I get, the "smarter" I am in doing the right things to be healthy. Feeling great and positive is, and has always been, a high priority in my life. Great book!!!

Great book!
By Metamorphis Arts
This book is a very good comprehensive nutrition book. Not just in its discussion of what is needed for good nutrition, or what vitamin deficiency does and how to correct it. It explains also the biochemistry of the nutritional functions in terms the average person could understand.

Not a book for the person looking for any easy diet to loose weight, or to understand why they are sick. This book is for those who really what the facts!

From Publishers Weekly
A bestseller and winner of multiple awards in Italy, Carofiglio's debut should please fans of American-style courtroom thrillers. A murder case presents Guido Guerrieri, the archetypal burned-out defense lawyer, with a chance at redemption. A Senegalese peddler, Abdou Thiam, is arrested for killing a nine-year-old boy, whose body was found at the bottom of a well near a coastal resort in southern Italy. Even though the police have only circumstantial evidence against Thiam, he's advised to take a plea bargain that would allow him to get off with only 20 years in prison. Guerrieri becomes convinced that his new client is the victim of racism and is being used as a scapegoat. Defying conventional wisdom and putting his own career on the line as well as Thiam's fate, Guerrieri takes the case to trial. The result is a powerful indictment of the Italian justice system. Unusual murder mystery
By M. Owens
Rather more information on the procedures of Italian justice than I wanted, but a great narrator, and the emotional content of his relationships - to his (ex)wife, his new lover, and to the accused - were well developed. The book has a satisfying although not unexpected ending.

It's clear you don't want to be Sengalese and a transient vendor in Italy when a child disappears, but it's a story that could probably happen anywhere. An interesting book. Had it been an American/British murder mystery, we probably would have found out "who dun it" - if you need that, it's not here.

The author is a working criminal lawyer (an investigating magistrate, sort of like a cross between a DA and a judge, if I understand correctly).

In any event, it's clear that he knows of what he speaks in this marvellous Italian trial procedural. Carofiglio has an acid wit, and the book is very amusing.

I found the character development and the romance less interesting, as it was not captured as well as the criminal case. But that's not why one reads this sort of book, anyway.

About the Author
Algis’ wanderlust has taken him all over the world. His quest for adventure coupled with his desire to save money led him to study and learn all about frequent flyer travel and travel hacking. His goal is to break down all the techniques into to simple, actionable steps that will teach others how to become elite travelers, fly First Class, get free checked bags, and stay in amazing hotel rooms around the world for practically nothing. To that end, he wrote a book, “Rock Your Travel”, and created a website, Rock Your Travel.

Finally, I won't have to coach my friends about frequent flyer tricks!
By Info Source
I've considered myself mileage geek, having subscribed to a $200/year newsletter on the same topic, and having taken several overseas trips each year for the past 5 years, never in coach, or paying for a ticket. I spend lots of time telling friends how to do all this, and now I can simply refer them to this excellent book.

This book captures the same information as $500 worth of newsletters, in a clear and concise format that won't waste your time. When reading, I sometimes anticipated that there was going to be an important secret that the author omitted. I was invariably wrong, because all the secrets are here.

I was amazed at how some obvious ideas like signing up for affinity credit cards to get the 30k-100k bonus miles were refined to artistry, like by determining which credit cards use which credit agencies, and spacing out your applications so one agency doesn't see too many applications, (and you can get hundreds of thousands of miles per year, without heavy spending.

It has common sense ideas like hanging up and trying again if you're having no luck getting award seats with one agent. People vary, and some can be stubborn, or less capable. And I'm an idiot (but wiser now) not to have known before recently booking a Hawaii trip on Alaska that my companion could have flown for only $99 if I had only had the right credit card!

Beyond the basics, it tells you how and why these procedures work. And to one who was already aware of most of the good ideas here, I'm impressed that nothing here was wrong, or obsolete.

This book is worth every penny.

Incidentally, this book is a starting point, and does not cover much more advanced techniques like (for those whose home airport is a hub) booking the return leg on one trip and outbound leg of the next trip as a single flight with a long stopover.

impressed traveler

I wish I had a way to write this review without it just sounding like a blatant sales pitch.

To be perfectly honest, before reading, I was pretty skeptical about the techniques used in Rock Your Travel. I'm not sure why exactly, I think it was just a lingering mistrust of banks and credit cards, and a feeling that the only REASON that "free" or extremely discounted travel could happen was because one way or another, the banks were going to get more money from you than they were giving you. I would hear about "40,000 mile bonus" offers, but I knew that the conversion rate between miles and dollars wasn't that great (how much could that bonus be? $40?) so I never examined them much further.

A third of the way through this book, I realized that I really ought to figure out how to check the miles balance on my newish (six-month-old) credit card-- I remembered at sign-up it had said something about a bonus. I logged in to discover 31,000 miles, which I knew instantly at this point in the book equated to (more than) a free plane ticket anywhere in the United States. I was sold.

While as a college student I've been very into using every spare penny to travel, I've honestly never thought I was doing so enough that I should be seriously playing the frequent flyer mile game, and it seemed way too confusing to try. It honestly doesn't seem so confusing now, and I'm itching to get into the game-- especially now that I'm out of school and will be able to more easily charge the "minimum purchase" required to get some of the bigger bonuses. The whole idea of this book is that you aren't really spending any money you wouldn't spend already-- you're just spending it differently (and your expenses do not need to be high at all.)

This book is for people who can be careful with and conscious of their money-- you will have to pay your balances in full every month and, I suspect, cancel certain credit cards after a year to avoid bank fees. However, the authors are careful to explain that if you use the techniques properly, you will not really have any noteworthy extra costs, and your credit score (something I was worried about) won't really be affected, unless you are looking to take out a car or house loan in the next few months.

Anyway, the bottom line is, I'm SO glad I read this book. It's not expensive (especially on Kindle) and a quick, engaging read-- there's little to lose and a lot to gain. Five stars from me-- if I end up broke from bank scams in a year, I promise I'll come back and edit this.

UPDATE:
Less than one year after reading Algis' book, and still on a very modest budget (I rarely spend more than $500 total per month) I have earned a total of 140,000 airline miles-- enough on one alliance for a flight to India and enough on two other alliances for two domestic tickets. At my previous rate of earning miles (one or two faithful credit cards, charging all expenses) I would have earned AT MOST 10,000 miles, not even enough for one domestic flight-- and, my credit score has actually increased. Awesome. Thanks again!

Flight Attendant, I'll have another free drink, please.
By Jason S
I've been hearing my friends talk about travelling for years, using skymiles, rewards points, etc. How in the hell did they accumulate so many miles in order to fly to all of these places for free? Some of them had more money than they knew what to do with, but me, well, not so much. I was looking into travelling, but plane tickets cost a damn fortune when you're trying to get to Europe. I was researching discounted travel books when I came across "Rock Your Travel" on Amazon. It seemed that there were tricks to capitalizing on rewards points, so I thought why not download the book for $6? I'm glad I did!
There are more ways than I ever imagined to rack up points on your credit cards, and fortunately my good credit allowed for me to apply to a card that gave me 50K miles for signing up. I then started using portals to rack up miles buying things I'd be buying anyway. I bought my Mom some flowers through the Delta portal and they gave me 12 miles for every dollar spent. Hell yes!

ATL to Amsterdam for 50K miles, flying first class. I had to travel at some weird times, and had a long layover, but hell, you can't beat first class. While I don't look like a Rockstar, I sure as s*** travel like one now.

Review

''This book will help readers tackle the really important challenges they face both in developing strategies and putting them into action."   Consulting Magazine   "A most innovative book. Mckeown genuinely synthesises a broad range of strategic thought into a coherent and actionable process. Mckeown brings together a number of apparently incompatible views to create a rich and powerful three dimensional understanding."   Marcus Alexander, Adjunct Professor London Business School, Associate Fellow Oxford University, Fellow Ashridge Strategic Management Centre

“Does exactly what it says on the tin – and does it brilliantly. This book will become a well- thumbed favourite.”

Emma Leech, Director of Marketing - The University of Nottingham

“You can pick it up, read a section, apply what you have learnt and then go back to read some more.”

Sue Toon, Direct of Management Alchemy

“Recommended…contains a vast array of strategic experience, which is pertinent at any level of management.”

Laura Dziaszyk, Director of Corporate Signpost

"The Strategy Book is a must read for anybody interested in systematically exploring strategy in their organization.  It is very readable, jargon-free and of enormous practical significance for planning and implementing strategy."
Prof. Cary L Cooper, CBE, Distinguished Professor of Organizational Psychology and Health at Lancaster University Management School

"My God, a strategy book that actually makes sense? Imagine that... Most strategy books are either exercises in waffling and vague generalities, or mind-numbingly boring laundry lists of could-a, would-a, should-a. Max Mckeown's take on strategy is neither, and as an antidote he has given us The Strategy Book, where no-nonsense pragmatism meets imagination and adaptive flexibility. This book reads the way a good strategic plan should – guidance but not dogma, to the point but with an eye open to alternative possibilities. It just might be the cheapest form of strategic insurance ever created."

Professor Alf Rehn, author of Dangerous Ideas, internationally active speaker and consultant

"The Strategy Book is superb. Quite frankly, it's the best, most relevant book I've read since Porter's early tomes. The author has a wonderful way of encapsulating strategic thinking from almost every angle. Max Mckeown is the next Michael Porter."

John Hall, President, Freedom Health LLC

"Max has a gift to reverse engineer complexity in a way that leaders can truly navigate how to lead their business, their people and their lives with both clarity and confidence. I would say Max is a preeminent map maker of our times."

Jennifer Sertl, President Agility3R and co-author Strategy Leadership & the Soul

‘It’s unusual for a management book to encourage readers to ask uncomfortable questions about their own products, leading to uncomfortable answers, and then to stimulate the inspiration and imagination to address those issues effectively.  Max explains a range of perspectives and tools with admirable clarity.  However, we don’t lose sight of the underlying challenges and risks in strategy development and implementation.  This is a book that disturbs and demystifies in a creatively helpful way.’

Professor David A. Buchanan, Author of Organizational Behaviour, Cranfield University

“Max de-clutters corporate speak and opens up strategy to everyone. His no nonsense approach to corporate strategy will teach you to look at your business like never before. In person, his insight is scalpel sharp and this book is a masterclass in improving your strategic thinking. You will learn to ask the big questions that need to be asked to get the core of strategic success.”

Steve Fortune, Global Leadership Development at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals

‘I love this book. Max Mckeown has the gift of making complex ideas accessible as well as enjoyable. One of the biggest challenges facing organisations today is making strategy come alive – especially with respect to innovation. Max demystifies the strategy process, bringing it to life with great examples. He challenges the reader to really think- as well as have the guts to take action.  With its rich array of strategy tools, this book will help any reader bridge the ‘theory-practice gap’ to produce results which really matter.’

Professor Linda Holbeche, Author of The High Performance Organisation, Centre for Leadership Innovation, University of Bedfordshire

"This book fills a gap in the strategy literature between toolkits, frameworks, implementation and the individual. Max Mckeown provides not only an array of fine examples from a wide range of organizations, but also challenges the reader by presenting strategy as both an everyday performance and as a down to earth art. It is a book which will appeal to practitioners and students alike and it provides a richness and a challenge to the often stultified frameworks which have come to characterise strategy".

Professor David Wilson, Author of Strategy: Analysis & Practice, Department of Sociology, University of Warwick

"Having worked with Max on innovation I had high expectations for The Strategy Book. In short - worth the wait, this is a great and truly helpful book which I fully expect to reference back to for years to come. Max has the ability to articulate clearly the challenges most organisations face in shaping their futures - and with consummate swagger, mixed with real life, powerful examples - guides you through strategic thinking relevant to not only today, but you and the job you do."

Geir Holmer, ex-Virgin Media , Independent Consultant

"After thoroughly enjoying (and benefiting greatly from) The Truth About Innovation, I was anxiously awaiting Max's next winner...and I think it's here! The Strategy Book totally demystifies 'strategy' for us non-MBA-types struggling to keep pace with the growing demands on our creativity and ability to lead from the front everyday...I look forward to this book hitting the shelves as I will be investing in a few copies for my team - material that we will refer to as a working guide to the strategic and planning process...and beyond! Another brilliant one from Max!!!"

Rahim Dawood, Manager, Systems and Technology

"This book is highly recommended reading and also a useful tool for military thinkers. It has a very good structure making it easy to embrace the powerful ideas inside.”

Harri Ohra-aho, Brigadier General of the Finnish Defence Forces

" If you want to become a better strategic thinker, read Max’s new book. Succinct and to-the-point, he captures the essence of strategy. With a passion and style all of his own, he connects insights from leading strategy gurus to successful practices in leading companies.”

Simon Collinson, Professor of Strategy, Henley Business School

"Max has his very own style of talking strategy - crossing all corporate and conventional boundaries. McKeown continues to walk the talk as a restless contributor for unconventional ideas. Follow the grandmaster of Innovation into new dimensions of strategy for the 21st century. A great book that’s also fun to read."
Jan-Henrik Andersson , Operations Director Metro AG

“I have not read every publication on strategy and now I don’t have to worry about that challenge anymore because I have just finished “The Strategy Book” and I feel confident that I will never find a better book on the subject.  Let me get a little thesaurus-giddy for a moment – superb, excellent, splendid, authoritative, sure-footed, impressive, thorough, accessible, essential, etc, etc.  I think you get the picture….Max McKeown has taken every aspect of strategy, maintained the seriousness of the subject, deconstructed it’s complexities and rebuilt his findings in a practical, no-nonsense way that makes his book unstuffy and easy to read.  It is that rare thing, an academic book that informs and entertains in a universally appealing way….. As you plan and chart your way through life and career, “The Strategy Book” will always be a very good friend to you”.

Where's the beef?
By V Gordon
I was really excited to receive this book based on all the excellent reviews. First a note personal note is in order. I work with clients to develop strategies for their business. Also, I judge a book by how actionable it is. Can I take the findings and apply them in real world situations using commonsense and a bit of real world experience. This book did not pass that test. In defense of the book, I think this would be hard, if not impossible in a small 234-page book.

I think that if the author would have expanded the "how to" portions of the book he would have an excellent work that could truly be called "The Strategy Book" For an example of what I mean there is a section of the book that my internal dialog went something like this, yes I agree that it is important to be flexible and creative in lookin' at what may happen next in your strategic group (p.107) but can you give me an examples of ways to do this in an organization - maybe some shortcuts that you have learned -perhaps some tools that really get to the nub of what may happen in your strategic group? The book is full of examples like these where the barest hints of what to do are provided. I can't help comparing this book to a few other strategy books like, "Seizing the White Space, Strategic and Competitive Analysis- Methods and Techniques...., Gaining and Sustaining Competitive Advantage, Failsafe Strategies, -and judging this book as lacking.

"Max is brilliant, original and entertaining, a business philosopher" according to his own self-description
By Jackal
Sturgeon's law says that 90% of everything is crap. Count this book in that category.

Absolutely nothing unique or novel in the book. It is just a rehash of a bunch of framework and models. Nothing wrong with most of frameworks presented, but the author just gives the basics, kind of one-pagers of everything, and he presents too many models. For instance: The author does not seem to understand that the BCG matrix can seriously mislead companies into going for scale, when they would have been better off with a niche strategy. Subtleties like that do not get much room in this book. The author is probably a decent motivational speaker for middle management that needs to deal with a bit of everything, but I would not let him into the C-suite.

Do yourself a favour, pick up one of the following books instead to understand strategy:
* Playing to Win: How Strategy Really Works is a restatement of Michael Porter's seminal ideas from the 1980s.
* All the Right Moves: A Guide to Crafting Breakthrough Strategy [Hardcover]. The models in that book are simpler than simple, but they are very thoughtful and I would say powerful.
* Business Model Generation: A Handbook for Visionaries, Game Changers, and Challengers has a bit more of a check list approach. Also good and I think the preferred choice is a matter of style preference.

There are many books about strategy and most of them are rather bad (and that includes the $200 textbooks). My advice is to read only the best and leave the rest. Read the three books above. If you want even more depth you should read Porter's books from 1980 and 1985. However, let me get back to the current book.

This book is certainly not going to make you into a strategist. To become a strategist you need to apply the models. There is so much tacit knowledge that comes with applying say the five forces model 25 times in 25 different industries. That application will turn you into a strategist, but it will take years and is hard work. This book does not help you get started. The author describes himself as "brilliant, original and entertaining, a business philosopher". Compared to that scale, this book is garbage. Is there no limit to self-promotion? The author commented (in an erased comment) that this is not his description but his publisher's description. Oh well, those bad publishers.

Finally, look at the list of endorsements. All from second and third rate institutions. And the amazon highlighted five star review is from the notorious reviewer Morris, who always gives five stars to everything that he reviews. Go ahead and buy the book if you want, but know what to expect.

Disappointing !
By sahin tulga
Purchasing and reading this book has been a great disappointment for me. I have ordered the book after reading numerous positive reviews. Now that I have read the book, it is obvious that the positive reviews have been coming from friends doing favors to the author. First of all, one can see that the author knows the subject well. He included few gems on strategy development that only a seasoned expert would know. However, the contents does nothing to help the reader to feel confident on attacking real-life strategy problems by themselves. It is a collection of headlines with vague content. Obviously, it is a "read it and call me for consultancy work later" type book that we encounter so often. Second, the tool kit which includes a collection of strategy and change management frameworks that are poorly explained. Again, there are no insights for practical use. Purchasing and reading this title has been a lesson for me in not trusting the glamorous reviews.

Poetic Diction: A Study in Meaning (Wesleyan Paperback), by Owen Barfield

Poetic Diction, first published in 1928, begins by asking why we call a given grouping of words “poetry” and why these arouse “aesthetic imagination” and produce pleasure in a receptive reader. Returning always to this personal experience of poetry, Owen Barfield at the same time seeks objective standards of criticism and a theory of poetic diction in broader philosophical considerations on the relation of world and thought. His profound musings explore concerns fundamental to the understanding and appreciation of poetry, including the nature of metaphor, poetic effect, the difference between verse and prose, and the essence of meaning.

Wonderful, and not at all outdated!
By KyrC
One of the reviewers here called Barfield 'a product of his time' and suggested that now he's useful only for practical use, not for contemporary scientists and theorists. I have to disagree, and that's why I'm writing this review.

1) Barfield's views on co-evolution of language and consciousness may not be widely accepted today, but surely they're not 'outdated'. His is simply an alternative theory of language history, and 'alternative' doesn't mean 'wrong'. It isn't 'naive' either: he only notes some rules at work in different languages (such as the tendency to greater abstraction), and applies them to poetry. Nowhere does he regard the metahistory of language as linear, and nowhere does he speak of 'primitive' times, or of evolution towards greater complexity in language, etc.

2) Barfield's theory of metaphor is very stimulating and not at all discredited today. Maybe the former reviewer read too much Donald Davidson who regards Barfield's theory invalid, but for example Paul Ricoeur often cites Barfield approvingly. So it's all a matter of scientific paradigm one works in.

I could go on forever, but it'd be better if you didn't trust anyone and simply read some Barfield. Don't read him with 'a priori' knowledge of his being outdated - simply read and evaluate his every argument for yourself to see if it's valid. Theories come and go, but thoughtful books remain.

Perennial and Profound
By Daniel J. Smitherman
By his own admission, Owen Barfield's writings can't be organized into "early" and "late" periods. He claimed that from the very first publications to the last, he was explicitly or implicitly working out his understanding of the evolution of human consciousness. His second published book, _Poetic Diction_, concerns the study of language as the record of the changing human experience of the world.
In _Poetic Diction_, Barfield argued that:
1. One defining effect of poetry is to "arouse aesthetic imagination"
2. A significant result of the interaction with the language of the poem is that the reader's awareness of the world is permanently expanded
3. The expansion of the reader's awareness correlates to the poet's own awareness of the world as articulated in the poem
Barfield supposed, further, that what may be prosaic to the author may still have a "poetic" effect on the reader, i.e., expanding the reader's awareness of the world. One consequence of these facts, Barfield argued, is that by reading, the reader perceives the world as the author perceives - or perceived - it. And if the text being read is a classical Latin text, or a Sanskrit text, for example, then the reader may experience very startling glimpses of the world as a result.
What he went on to argue was that, if we grant that this effect of poetic diction on our awareness of the world is a real effect, then we cannot escape the conclusion that the world as the authors of the Latin and Sanskrit texts was a very different world than our own. Further, he argued that one could trace those differences in the changes that languages have undergone since human languages have been recorded. Finally, by studying these changes, said Barfield, one sees that human consciousness in its first expressions in language was almost wholly perceptual and figurative.
Barfield then argued that the "poetic effect" of such ancient texts was that they make available to the reader an experience of the world that correlates to their concrete and figurative language, and that world is one that couldn't have been produced analytically and self-consciously - for instance, by superstition or some early attempts at scientific theorizing. Just as our language today expresses in myriad ways what we take to be real, so the ancient languages too.
Thus Barfield's conclusions about *poetry* are nothing at all like what contemporary academic literary theory concludes, because Barfield's conclusions are equivalent to a theory of knowledge - while contemporary literary theory denies implicitly that a theory of knowledge is even possible.
As literary theory, then, _Poetic Diction_ is only marginally relevant, if even that, because literary theorists no longer concern themselves with knowledge. As a theory of knowledge, and as a study of the significance of language and the evolution of human consciousness, _Poetic Diction_ remains a seminal work, the challenges of which have yet to be realized in but a few works even today.

Forgotten Classic..70 years ahead of its Time!
By A Customer
This book...along with a very few others (like Marshall McLuhan's UNDERSTANDING MEDIA)...deserves its reputation as an underground classic treasured by all those who take a serious interest in Language Studies. Barfield's insights into the deep structure of metaphors as the real engine of a given language's history are only now being studied in laboratories dedicated to mapping language functions in the human brain. It has been kept in print for 50 years (well beyond the lifespan of similar books on philosophy and linguistics of its time) for one reason...it has been passed on from teachers to students as a ritual gift that has the power to shatter a mind and transform its understanding of its own workings. It will still be read when the next millenium ends

Marvel Encyclopedia
By Nia Lipscomb
Pros: the book came earlier than expected
very informative
exactly like it looks in the picture
got it cheaper than retail price

Cons: I don't know if the paper cover on the outside was damaged because of the box and shipment or if the seller left it like that, but that was the only downer.

Overall, I liked it. I bought the book for a good friend of mine and he loves it. Also, since I'm a beginner learner in the Marvel world, this book is helping me a lot with the character info. It's very detailed, colorful, the pictures are very well illustrated and it's really interesting. We didn't want to put it down! I would definitely recommend this book to people like me, who want to learn more or people who love comics and just need a refresher.

NERDS REJOICE IN RELIVING THE PAST!!!
By Amazon Customer
Growing up I was a huge X-men nerd. My wife and I decided to decorate with a comic theme in a bar/game room we were building instead of sports or wine like everyone else we know were doing. After putting up numerous comic cover replica posters aroudn the room, I stumbled upon this Marvel Encyclopedia. Read a few reviews and HAD to have it. This book is great and detailed about every character I could think of. Some get a 5 or 6 page spread like Spider Man and most of the Avengers. The only thing that could be negative with this book are things like, The Avengers 2 villain (Thanos) is very unknown and doesn't have much of a back story. He only has a small snippet of information on 1/4 of a page. This is fine now, but after A2 becomes a hit Thanos will surely rise greatly in popularity. Oh, also I brought this book to work with me and was asked "How much did you pay for a book like that? around $80-100 I bet." Nope, says $40 on the inside cover and got it for $20 on Amazon with free Prime shipping.

Book of all Marvel books!
By Melodie G Ellis
If your a Marvel fan or let a lone any comic book fan, this is a must have! I was surprised at how many characters there were. This book goes really far back to characters I could remember as a kid that are no longer a hit with the times and the bios everyone had were amazing! I originally bought this for my son but being the Marvel geek that I am I'm sure Ive spent more time reading it while hes at school than anything. My son really enjoyed the comics through the ages sections where they have comic book covers based on what decade they came out. It was fun to point out the cost of each comic book back then and how as a kid we would scrounge all the money we could find just to buy that 25 cent comic book.
