The text flows nicely and is great for either a read-aloud or a read-alone. The pace will be attractive to younger readers and listeners, and the narrative presents opportunities for teaching vocabulary. The protagonist is immediately likable and engaging, even after his original scheme falls flat. This would be a good book for fans of Kelly Bennett's Not Norman (Candlewick, 2005), as both convey lessons on gratitude and making the best of situations. Fun book for both shark lovers and dog lovers. The cute boy with the shark-like hair learns to love his new puppy even though she is not the shark he always wanted. Great book for kids who already have a pet or who are wishing for one.

This book is beautifully illustrated with graphic design sprinkled throughout the text. The story is about a boy who really wants a pet shark for his birthday. So the boy drops all of the normal hints that one would drop to clue in their parents that a pet shark would be the best birthday present ever, minus the part about the pet being a shark. The boys parents buy the boy a pet DOG for his birthday. The boy is disappointed, to say the least. Hilarity ensues. In the end, the boy realizes that shark lovers can also be dog lovers and begins dropping hints for his next birthday surprise.

I am not entirely sure that my 3-year-old was able to really comprehend the humor in this story. He couldn't get over the idea that anyone would want a shark for a pet, because "sharks eat people's bones and muscles.. " However, I thought it was funny and very well written. Much better than most "literature" that is out there for young children. I am sure we will read it again tomorrow and he will understand more of the story. I can see this one becoming a favorite in a few years.

Great for the beginner

I was exploring fruitarianism as a new way of eating, and I was searching for a book that would explain it and guide me along the way. I was disappointed with most of the selections on amazon. Most of the ones I purchased did not compare to "Fruitarians Are The Future" one book didn't even give a definition or an example of what to eat or which type of fruit you shouldn't eat together. I was looking for basic down-to-earth information not fluff, philosophy or scientific theories, all of which are important but not for the layman. If you are interested in becoming a fruitarian this is a great book to start with, you will learn why fruitarianism is important and great meal recipes and instructions.

I was disappointed in this book. The information is basic, the type is large, the margins are wide. There are typos and repeated paragraphs. I read it in a day and was unimpressed with the guidelines for eating a mono meal: 9 clamshells of strawberries as a single mono- meal? Not realistic, not only from the standpoint of where to keep a several days worth of meals, but also the cost of this quantity of eating fruits (especially if this is something you want to encourage your family to do). Unless you live on a farm and have access to seasonal fruit year round, the diet recommended in this book is not an option for most people. I want to support the fruitarian lifestyle and the writer of this book, but for the price, this book does not contain enough information for me to recommend it to anyone.

This is the text that is currently being used for the undergraduate class "Principles of Controlled Thermonuclear Fusion" NPRE421, at the University of Illinois. Inside you will find that a good background in fusion fundamentals as well as plasma physics are presented in Chapters 1-10. The remainder of the text relates every substantial area of fusion research going on in the world, from Tokamaks to Muon Catalyed Fusion ala 1970. While that may seem like a long time ago and outdated, the putrid level of Fusion research in the U.S. over the last 40 years has enabled this work to be as relevant today as it was in 1970. I have yet to come across another tome with as much breadth and depth as Dolan has. Having met the author I am hopeful that an update is forthcoming but at nearly 1000 pages already, where would you put it?

About the Author
Dr. James Thompson has more than 35 years of experience in noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH), finite-element analysis, experimental mechanics, and testing. He was the executive director of sales, marketing, and NVH at Link Engineering Co. for nearly 10 years. In this capacity, he played a major role in the development of brake NVH dynamometers and vehicle test systems. He also has worked as a consultant on several brake NVH issues and has led testing programs successful in resolving such issues for major OEMs, Tier 1, and Tier 2 suppliers.

Dr. Thompson received his PhD in mechanical engineering from Purdue University in 1979 and his BS and MS in mechanical engineering both from Virginia Tech in 1974. Both his master's thesis and PhD dissertations were on the topics of acoustics and noise control.
