Alysia Constantine lives in Brooklyn, NY, with her wife, their two dogs, and a cat. When she is not writing, she is a professor at an art college. Before that, she was a baker and cook for a caterer, and before that, she was a poet. Sweet is her first novel.

Sweet, salty, savory multilayered story of love, loss & moving forward

I fell in love with this book during the first chapter. The lush writing, the real characters, the stumbling towards romance, the "greek chorus" of the narrative speaking directly to the reader all work together to make this something special. While I've always had a love affair with baked goods, I've gained a new appreciation for gourmet pastries after reading the author's wonderfully detailed descriptions and how they retain the love and care of the baker before transferring to the lucky person who consumes them. From the initial sunshine cupcake to the salted carmel decadence and the peach pie, I wanted to be Teddy as he experienced each one. (and the salted carmel cupcake IS an experience.)
Aside from the sweet fluff, there are heart felt and realistic reflections on family, relationships, life, love, loss & moving forward. This story hit me on so many levels and prompted me to reflect on my own life and view it through a different lens. Plus, I now have an overwhelming urge to scout out the best pastry shop in the area to find my own salted carmel cupcake. ;-)

Delectable, magical, satisfying book

Much to my delight, I received an advance copy of Sweet to review, and I sped through it with an almost insatiable hunger. Constantine's lyrical turn of phrase is unmatched, and the story moves at a satisfying clip, helped along by a delightful group of side characters -- especially 'Trice, the bakery assistant.
The book is magical (yet mostly realistic) all the way through, but there is one plot point that I felt would have made more sense, and been more emotionally satisfying, if it had gone another way. One scene and its repercussions seem to me (though others have disagreed) to contradict some little "hints" given earlier in the story in a way that is slightly jarring, but it is not detrimental to the book's overall appeal.
To put it succinctly: this book is so well-written that one scene had me craving a food I detest.

Very Sweet!

“‘You’re making me so nervous. I’m a wreck,’ and pressed his lips to Jules’s forehead in a gentle kiss until Jules looked up . And then Teddy kissed him again, on the mouth, a kiss that really counted, with his eyes closed tight and his fingers pressing against the sharp bones of Jules’s shoulders.”

This book is so magically sweet!! I loved this book so much!! I swear I was hugging my kindle when it was over!! I fell in love with Jules and Teddy!!! They are just so likeable, there’s no way you can’t fall all over them both!!
