Review

“Most notably the book is ambivalent about much of the promises claimed by the advocates of music’s transformative potential, but is never bleak, retaining a refreshing realism about the capacity of music to matter to people, publics and nations across the world.”  (New Books In Critical Theory, 19 June 2014)

Review

"Many of us who love popular music call ourselves 'poptimist' these days without bothering to establish a theoretical framework that would make that catchy term meaningful. In this slim, lucid, infinitely deep book, David Hesmondhalgh offers a way into that process. His conclusions about music's impact on our personal and social lives have already become essential to my own work, and any music scholar, critic, musician or fan will benefit from his calm, clear, uncompromising voice."
Ann Powers, Pop Music Critic, National Public Radio

"A terrific book: passionate, cogent, and best of all a strong defence of central role of aesthetic experience in fostering human flourishing and mutuality. A timely shot across the bows of new utilitarians in government and a much needed reminder to many in contemporary cultural and communication studies that analysis needs to have an ethical grounding."
Graham Murdock, Loughborough University

“This is also about why freedom, solidarity and love matter. Hesmondhalgh's wide-ranging and thought-provoking study sets the agenda for musicology's latest affective turn.”
Martin Stokes, King's College London

In what ways does music enrich the lives of people and of societies? What prevents it from doing so? In this carefully researched and insightful study, Hesmondhalgh examines the role of music in our lives, and how people forge connections with others through music. However, it also argues that music cannot remain unaffected by the inequalities that stain modern life. Through this critical defense of music, a variety of theories and approaches are brought together. In doing so, Hesmondhalgh provides a distinctive and valuable perspective on the general subject of music that builds on previous research from a variety of fields but also goes beyond them in instructive new ways. The result is a landmark study of the social value of music and an indispensable contribution to a variety of intersecting fields, written with enormous clarity, by a leading music scholar.

It's perhaps not a perfect distillation of its intended subject
By Matt R. Lohr
Hesmondhalgh's socio-cultural study starts out a little bit rough, spending a lot of time telling us things he's going to tell us without actually telling us those things. But as this swift, theoretically intricate but surprisingly readable volume digs into its subject matter, the writer uncovers interesting notions about the complexly sexualized cultural presentation of black music; various regional and ethnic musics of oppressed minorities that ended up essentially becoming "national" musics; what precisely constitutes "folk music," and how political said music is obligated to be; and the ways in which people use music both as a tool of self-definition and as a means of excluding others (the idea of a class-based approach to music is one that I had not truly theoretically dug into, and Hesmondhalgh's book is an exemplary introduction to this notion). It's perhaps not a perfect distillation of its intended subject, but with such a broad thesis, how could it be? Nevertheless, recommended reading for anyone interesting in the greater meaning of the songs we often tap our foot to, but otherwise take for granted.
