About the Author
SAM DJANG writes novels and poems. He is an historian specialized in the history of Genghis Khan. For the literary side, he was much influenced by authors like Boris Pasternak, Guy de Maupassant and Ernest Hemingway. Extremely interested in history, his research focused on Genghis Khan and his Mongol empire which, he believes, was the positive turning point of the world history that helped create the modern world.

Well researched, poorly written

I've not read this author before, but I have read a great deal about the various Khan empires. While the historical research here seems above average for authors in this genre, the story is lacking. The flip back and forth between "telling" the story and allowing the story to develop through the characters is frustrating.

Great read about a great individual

Perhaps we are too comfortable to understand why Temujin had the need to fight, to conquer the world of his time. Perhaps we are too removed from the vast quietude and stresses of the Mongolian plateau and its life supporting requirements. Author Sam Djang invested more than eight years in the study of the cultures, environment, history and philosophies of that period of time when the Mongol tribes united and conquered the world.
Genghis Kahn, The World Conqueror, attempts, in two volumes, to provide us with an insight into that everyday individual, social, and political time and place. Written simply, gentle winds and sunrises give way to "gail, hail and dusty brown clouds." The nomadic life of Mongolian tribes was harsh, and the belief that a man had to fight or die sustained them.
Traveling along with the tribes, wandering through the lands, seasons and lives of individuals, the reader grows into an understanding. Stories told to children influence the wars and decisions of grown men and nations. Drawn inexorably forward, the reader is led to understand how the empire of Genghis Khan evolved into the greatest and largest our world has known.

This fascinating book reminds me why historical fiction is worthwhile. By taking certain liberties, the author is able to make the reader feel like a contemporary witness. We care more about the characters. The charming episode describing the first meeting of the young Temujin and the little girl destined to be his wife is worth the price of the book. The author makes learning fun.
